We Can Make The Morning
“Dreams can make the sun feel much brighter”
This is my favorite song of all-time. Released February 20th, 1972, We Can Make The Morning was included in one of my favorite albums. Elvis Now included Help Me Make It Through The Night, Hey Jude, Until It’s Time For You To Go, and Sylvia. This song has a very special history for me. I actually heard this song for the first time in Memphis, TN in 2009. I bought an $80 CD compilation just because this song was on one of the albums. My sister, Crystle, and two best friends come to mind when I hear this song. This song to us represents everything related to the candlelight vigil at Graceland.
On August 15th every year, there is a candlelight vigil in the memory of Elvis Presley. Elvis Presley Blvd. is shut down and thousands of fans from all over the world congregate to pay respect to Elvis. It is one of the most moving experiences I have ever been a part of. The lyrics to this song get me every time. I cannot help but cry and think of the vigil. Surrounded by friends, holding candles, listening to Elvis music softly playing, and just crying. “Fate holds out a candle for your footsteps.” The vigil begins at 8pm and lasts until the early hours of the morning as everyone walks up through the gates of Graceland all the way to his grave in the Meditation Gardens.
We Can Make The Morning
There is another reason this song means so much to me. This is extremely difficult for me to talk about since not many people know about this; if anyone at all. As I mentioned in a previous post, I suffer from depression. Though I have gotten much better, I still have off days. A few years ago, I found myself lost and with no one to turn to. I was scared and hopeless. After having a very difficult day, I looked around at the life I had and just wanted out. Attempting to change aspects of my life thinking it would help, I found it only made me more hopeless. Afraid of the consequences of an actual change, I thought the only way out was to end my life.
I was typing on my laptop when my iTunes popped up on its own and started playing We Can Make the Morning. I listened to it over 20 times taking in all the lyrics and it truly gave me hope. “It’s a long, long lonely night. We can make the morning if we try. Girl, we can make the morning you and I together”. Whenever I listen to this song I cry, when it gets to that part I usually start sobbing. I am so unbelievably thankful my iTunes randomly opened up and started playing this song. This song literally saved my life and it will forever be my favorite song (not just Elvis song) of all time.
